I am only 20 years old, having problems finding a job.

Hi everyone,

I have just recently graduated from U.S.T.D.S and I am having some serious problems finding work; I cannot go OTR or get hired for dedicated runs. I have tried every local company I can think of to see they will hire me at my age; however every company I have went to has stated “they can’t hire me at 20- I have to be 21 and have at least 1 year of experience”. I live in Apple Valley, California; I am even willing to drive or relocate to another part of California to get work. Do any of you have any answers or ideas that can help me?

Go to the local Union's office or hiring hall. They are in your phone book or Google. Tell them you want to join and ask for a list of companies they represent. Try Covina, LA or SF Bay area. When I started in '71, I went to the TD school then in Zimmer's Peck Rd TS, El Monte, slept in my car and solicited lumping for cash on their lot. You can do it too. Get going!

I can tell you that the Union will NOT kiss your butt. They may tell you whom to solicit. They might put you on the bench or they may tell you there is no work just now.
