I'm thinking about starting Star truck driving school here in IL. I would like to get a class B CDL. My question for you people that have had a CDL for a while is this.... I have been looking at class B CDL jobs around here, and it just seems like they all want at LEAST 1 year driving experience. If I graduated from Star trucking school would I just be screwed and not be able to find a local job??

Thanks in advance guys.

I got my class B and I say your best bet is to get a friend who is well spoken to say you drove for him. Thats what I did most of these companies call up the number you give them. You have to tell them it was off the books. Make sure your friend puts a company name on his voicemail and that he answers the phone with that company name. Like Hello this is Mike at ABC Company how can I help you. Just remember to get all your job duties, what you were delivering and all the info the same. Good luck.Make sure its not a company like pepsi yet until you get some exp.

I am a lead instructor at a CDL school in Michigan. We train students for "A" and "B" lic. Some students think because they attend a school for 3 weeks that they are truck drivers. The school is only the begining you have much to learn before you are a pro. We help our students with job placement, but remember you are not going to start at the top of the pay scale. The bulk of the good jobs are held buy the most experenced drivers. You should have got the "A" lic and it would have improved your chances for a local job. As for the $7000.00 we charge $3900.00. You can hold out till your 30 but they will still want (prefer) experince. You can go with an expedite co. get some road time then try local again.

try checking with some moving companies -- a lot of them run class b trucks and you are home most weekends and even during the week sometimes if you have a local job

U know what this is all a big mess , We go get a cdl to get a good job ,so we can make a few bucks. The reality of it is if u dont have a hook somewhere you are just spinning your wheels trying to find someone who will give u a shot.U r not worth the risk to the insurance copany , so then u either find yourself OTR or working for some broke ass truckin alfit with old equipment that pays jack shiz.I have called for jobs and all u can get out is ur name and what ur calling about and they ask "u have any exp."..If the answer is no then its dial tone for u pal.If anyone can give me a way to get that exp. w out the OTR lets hear it.

I got my cdl driving for a school bus co. 12.75 an hr.. No benefits but they paid me to get a class b. Then I got a job with an local air freight co. working wknds. Hauling periodicals for the us mail . More money but still no benefits. Now I'm working one job for a freight forwarder in philadelphia. Even more money, tons of OT, plus benefits, and wknds. off. With the initial investment of two years working two jobs, the last six years I'm consistantly making btw. $40- $50,000 a yr. Now there is alot of small companies doing the same thing. Most run non cdl trucks because its cheaper. And want cdl drivers because we're cheaper to insure. In the philadelphia region non union pays $13-$19.00 hr. union pays $16-$28.00 hr. DHL for example. Oh! I forgot, the bus co. gave me $800.00 hiring bonus for getting the cdl. w/air brake and passenger endorsment. I could also change careers and drive coach buses to atlantic city casino's. Those drivers make up to $60,000 plus tips. I like what I'm doing and the people are great.I hope this gives you some ideas. Good luck, see ya down the road.

Point blank the whole industry sucks.. They want the driver to completely devote his life to trucking, but they dont want to pay him or her for the sacrifice. The big companies like swift, j.b hunt, werner etc feel like why should we pay them what they are worth? The urban legend is that truckers earn good pay.. When actually most of them dont even earn over 50k a year.. All they earn is divorces from never being home with their families, and stress because thru it all they still cant pay their bills.. I been driving for 5 years.. I got a class A cdl with average exp and credentials expected in 5 years and its been a waste of time for the most part.. Everybody on the outside looking in hear that truckers earn god pay so they go to school. Then most of em see they have trouble finding jobs, then when they get one the pay is useless, they quit, and another sucker starts the cycle all over again and spends $3,000+ to learn how to drive.. And this industry thrives on that cycle. New drivers who know no better. Look at the turn over rates for all them big fortune 500 companies. Its almost 50%! If it was so good why does everybody leave? And lets not even talk about owner op's.. I got a couple friends that own trucks.. Been doin it for years, and still cant clear $1,500 a week. Its pathetic. The whole trucking system is designed for all the yuppy college boys n girls who book the loads to get rich shuffling paperwork while the grunts who do all the ground work get nothing but laughed at behind closed doors by preppy management in air conditioned cubicles..

reality in chicago-man you speak the truth! Ive been a residential trash truck driver for CR&R a small trash company for 7 years. the starting pay was 11.25/hr and over five years it tops out at 17.50 hr only reason i have not quit is the benefits are somewhat decent and we are in a recession. I have never cleared 50k highest i ever got was 48k and that was alot of overtime.

If you're wanting OTR, just go to your local truck stop and pick up a book and look through them. There are LOTS of OTR companies looking for people with little or no exp. to drive for them.

No your not screwed. You just cant start at the top. Try driving for an owner operator or apply for regional or weekly home time positions. Remember even if you start a regional position, that dont mean you have to stay on there past 6 months. also every job transfers within so start a weekly home time job and then transfer in 2 or 3 months

Try local unions to see if they have an apprentice program for truck driving. An apprentice program is free and you will work and earn money while you are learning. They are out there you just need to look. My husband is in the construction trade and has had his B CDL for over 10 years. He works maybe 9 months out of the year becuase of weather conditions but will still gross about $55K this year. Scale is just under $30.00 per hour and the benefits are good. My husbands employer pays for our family health and welfare benefits and contributes to the pension fund. To get his license he applied for a job with the Chicago Transit Authority. He was able to get a job cleaning busses and a B CDL was required. The CTA is certified to train drivers. He went through their program (about 1-2 weeks) and the instructor gave him paperwork to take tothe DMV to get his CDL. Our only expense was the written exam and the cost of the license. There is good work out there but everyone needs to start at the bottom and work their way to the top.

scott
this is what i did i went to the local community college here and took their truck driver course. make sure the course is PTDI certified. like you i had no experience but some company's recognize finishing the PTDI course as 1 year of exp. also understand this class should take you about 12 weeks to finish , i dont know the costs of the school in your area but over here i got everything from my health exam to final day of testing for the license for 900 bucks. and a few months later hired on with a nationally known freight company at 52 cents per mile and they would not even consider with out the PTDI certificate so check it out and good luck

I have my CDL Class B for about three months and I am this close to getting a job with FedEx. I would say them and UPS would be best to try and start with they don't seem to be that worried about experience. I now just have to worry about a felony that I was convicted of almost eight years ago, and it won't go away.
