Personal style allowed?

Are you allowed to dye your hair funky colors (not just blonde highlights and red tones, but like purple tips or chunks or whatever) just as a personal style if you're a surgical tech (after all, your head will be covered) or will they consdier you immature looking for expressing yourself?
It's the only thing you can practically "customize" next to your sock patterns and glasses's color, probably, since everyone wears assigned color scrubs.
I've seen a woman walking around with pink tips and scrubs. I'm guessing she worked somewhere where it wasn't as conservative.

Anyone know?

It really depends on the policies of the hospital. The hospital where I currently work anything goes (except facial piercings for safety reasons). Hair, scrubs, shoes, nails, makeup, hats... no one cares. My previous employer was a little more strict, but your hair is yours, it's covered, go for it! Who cares what your coworkers think

Finally someone answers. Thank you. I had asked my parents their opinion and my dad said that it looked "unprofessional" and that I would have to work hard to prove that I'm good at what I do to be taken seriously despire my apparence. My mom said it wouldn't matter as long as you know you're great at your job no one should care. So, see. I got confused. I just didn't want people/patients around to think I look kiddish or whatever. It's just to spice things up (not that I should care what they think...much). ;)

The only area it may affect you with is the interview process. After that like you said the hair is always covered.

Thanks for this question. I'm lurking considering going to school for ST in the next year or two. I'm male and Caucasian but I have (very neatly kept)chestlength dreadlocks. I was wondering the same thing, essentially. I find it kind of discriminatory, really--on someone of a different race and definitely on a female I have seen many people in very professional positions with hair just like mine!

It seems to me once you're in the OR, you're covered pretty much entirely, so I'm hoping I can sneak past the interviews with it pulled back and a classy conservative suit to distract from it.

After I got interviewed for the program I asked them upfront about it and they said it does REALLY matter (sort of) but that I would be representing the program (against everyone else from diff. schools who might get offered a job in the hospital). So I got the impression that she thought it wasn't such a good idea (at least in the program) and that I would have to find out the hospital's policy wherever I might get hired.

Sadly, I wasn't accepted into the program (even after cutting my hair) :( But there is always next year...

that sux that you were not accepted in the program, i'm currently on the waiting list for surgical tech here and i've always have had crazy hair, but i too am very cautious for that reason i'm stayin plain jane with my jet black hair until i get settled in a good job then one day if the policy does not state clearly not to go wild with hair i will color my hair again. i think its stupid for people to judge someone on looks itself but society is that way. so i plan on waiting a while and then slowly adding some streaks and eventually just being myself. i'm sure by then i'll more than prove myself to whomever i'm working for that a lil color does not make you who you are.

Yeah. Gotta read the dang fine print. It really does suck being judged on apparence. What can we do? It's the work place and in some places you have to "blend in". Self-expression is quite limited.

I get that make-up and jewlery are not really allowed in the OR to keep "sterile" but hair is another thing. Hairstyles just don't cut it for me, especially since it'll always be pulled back away from your face. I have to do something so I don't feel so monotonous.
