hey what Hosp. do you work at? I reside in Long Beach. Hi, My name is Gabriel and my dad has been a tech for about 20 years. Hes not certified either becuase during that time when he went to a school for ST, it wasnt a big deal to get certified. Im currently going to my externship hospital soon, but I also scub for a plastic surgeon in Torrance ca. My dad went to the same school as me, Glendale Career College and thats where im attending. But yeah your right, you and my dad are called old school techs. thats what they callem. lol. Many employers are seeking the certifcation now because it not only looks good on your resume but it helps in advancing or specialty as well. I believe you can still take the test as long as you went to an accredited program by CAHEEP and approved from AST. Its like 400 dollars. I dont know the exact price because my school pays for mine so im good to go. But I know where your coming from. My dad isnt certified either but he gets paid well. One thing about being certified is that a doctor is going to hire me after my externship when i could work full time and I'll be getting almost what my dad gets now! thats great. I want to get into hearts myself and I am moving to La jolla after I graduate so if that doctor dont follow through with his promise to hire me, you can probably get refer me! lol. anyways I want to get into open hearts and bypass surg. Ive seen a CABG done at a hospital and it was awesome. I know the director and the vice president for AST. they are trying to pass a law that implements structural professionalism in the field of surgical technologists. If this new law passes by the board legislators then our profession will be more respected like that of an RN. Our work is very crucial and with these techs that are unexperienced, never went to a Program, AND not or uncertified they downgrade our profession and the respect level is real low, not to mention underpaid. goodluck well thanks Gabriel

Hello,
I'm currently a freshmen at Marshall University and I've recently switched to Marshall's Community and Technical College in order to take courses for to become a Surgical Technician. After reading several comments from other forums,I'm left dissappointed due to the fact that most hospitals will not hire anyone unless they have at least a year of experience.I'm very intersted in this career and I'd really like to pursue it,however,I'm unsure of what to do about not having any experiance.Due to your great knowledge about this particular career, what training programs or internships do you recommend?Any advice is greatly appreciated.Thank you!
