Hi I am taking my test tomorrow and I have been told and read that the new Appleton and lange Study guide is the best resource. some of the test questions are actually worded the same on the exam. You can get the book for $55 from borders.

I found the test easy both times that I've taken it, the first was after I graduated from school so the information was fresh. If you've done your homework and paid attention in clinicals then the test will be a walk in the park. I just took the test again, due to my certification expiring and a 6 year hiatus from work and I did great with reviewing Alexander's and the Surgical Technologist book, along with anatomy books. Basically everything that you've learned in school. If you take the practice test via www.ast.org/ that will give you a good idea of what the test will be like and the type of questions that are asked. The test is only easy if you've done your homework. |

I took the Cert. exam June 4th 08, I missed it by 1 freaking point. I am retaking it in 2 weeks. There were a lot of positioning questions, KNOW YOUR MEDS, also your drains and which drain would be used for TURP. They used different names for positions, so you might look over your positions and names. I know sims was used a lot. I'm trying to think of any and everything! Booke is an articulated retractor, I am almost postive that question is what held me back. I had never used or seen that instrument and I went for something I knew, go figure! Well, good luck to us all CST... |

The 2 books that my class had to study out of were AST certifying Exam Study Guide (AST Book, this book was given to us thru our membership with AST) and the Complete review (Boegli Book, this book we had to buy for like $60.00) Our teacher was on the board to help with the test questions, she couldn't give us the questions but she was very helpful in stating what to make sure and put to memory. The Appleton and Lane (or whatever its called) we went over a little but she said so many of those questions are horrible and out of the 21 students in our class I was the only one that didn't pass. So I truly believe that the 2 books were awesome resources. Good luck!!!!!!!! |

Hey does anyone have any tips on what to focus on studying for the test? |

Does the test focus on one particular specialty? I haven't taken the test yet but am currently studying for it. I have some experience in most of the specialties except ENT, pediatrics, and CardioVascular surgery. I fear my test will have alot of questions about these specialties. Any help guys? Thanks in advance. |

Okay I have been doing my home work for us all. I have been reading that the Appleton and Lange book is not the best study guide. It gives us an idea of how the test is going to be like. There is a lot of studying involved and time you have to spend studying. I looked up the CST handbook on the NBSTSA web site and found the CST handbook. It gives you a break down of the material and you need to look it up and understand it. It starts in PERI-Op, INTRA-OP, POST-OP, Additional Duties, Basic Science. Gives you a list of the books you can reference to such as ALEXANDER"S Care of the Patient in SUrgery, PDR, Grays Anatomy, Laws and Ethics, ETC..... I do belive that if you take my advise then you will past the CST EXAM we a great sucess rate. STUDY STUDY like you have never STUDY before... GOOD LUCK TO ALL |

I have taken the test also and failed it. It was very dicouraging for me,because I know the job but can't pass the test whats up with that? I have worked as a tech in a small hospital for 2 years and when I moved to a bigger city could not get a job because of me not being certified, I guess. I have decided to retake the test,is there a time limit to taking the test again? I am really thinking about giving it up and going to RN school, but I love the job! |

I failed the test by 1 point in June. The wait is only 3 weeks. I have paid to retake it but I have rescheduled it twice. I was so bummed after failing the first time I am now discouraged and afraid to take it again. I have until Dec to take it again. I have heard the new lay out has fill in the blank. That makes me way too nervous! |
