May of 2008 was suppose to be a monumental moment in my life. It was the month I graduated from College. After 5 long years I had finally gotten my degree and was off to enter the professional work force. It had been a good trip, college wasn't easy, but nothing in life worth doing ever is. I worked hard in school and graduated with honors, I even worked full time as a marketing assistant for a start-up company helping them earn over (I sh** you not) 2.6 million dollars off of a 65,000 dollar budget in the first year only to get my hours cut to a measly 5 a week the month of my graduation. It was ok though, I had a years worth of professional experience, a long list of volunteer projects, good grades, and a degree. I could just get a new job.

I spent the first month visiting all of my family whom I had not seen much of during my hectic school year and caught up with some old friends.

May turned into June, June turned into July, and so on and so forth. I had applied to countless jobs on craigslist, monster, careerbuilder, company websites, and tried to call up on some contacts I had made. I remained optimistic each day, applying for more and more jobs. With each month, however, I became slightly more distraught. I had applied for countless jobs and had not received a single email in reply. Nothing. I would receive a receipt of application, but no one ever followed up. Since May, I have received only one followup email to tell me that I had not been selected for the interviewing process. I haven't even received emails or calls from my contacts whom had told me to contact them once I graduated. (yes my gmail is working)

We have just entered October and I still don't have a job. My whole life I have either been in school, working, or both. I'm a very hard working, dedicated, and intelligent individual, but nothing has made me feel more worthless than looking for a job and not even getting the common courtesy of a response. I feel invisible.

Well, if you graduated with honors then you must be smart enough to do a solid resume with cover. So, I won't bother covering that part.

I would honestly discuss this with the Career Office at your college. AND, make sure you express your FRUSTRATION to them regarding not having a job yet! You want them to know that this s_cks and you are very frustrated. You want to get them to actively help you on a weekly basis in landing a GOOD job. (not just any job) They should have some contacts.

If you read Indeed on a regular basis you will know that there are alot of people just like you and at different stages in their professional life. I'm one of them and it s_cks.

What was your major?

I don't know much about that field. Are advertising jobs the only thing you have been applying for.

Nope... just about anything related to the field. I've applied for positions from Ad Sales, to Account Exec, Creative Designer, Copywriter, Web Developer, etc.

Listen, I'm sorry but I actually have to run.

I was just being sarcastic earlier when I wrote, "So, what you want from me". I was just blowing off some steam from also not having a job.

Good Luck, maybe I will have time later for writing. Take care.

Hello:

I am sorry to hear that, but I know how you feel, I am not a recent college grad, but I was out of work from about last May. The job market at this moment s_ucks and there is a lot of competition out there at the moment but don’t feel discourage for that, something will come up and like it happen in my case the day I got hired I receive two other to job offers the same day. I think life likes to play games many times.

I will also try Yahoo Directory or it may sounds crazy but the web sites for trade shows and conferences they will have list of many companies and their web sites, you’ll be surprise how many you can find that didn’t know they even exist and they don’t post their vacancies on any job boards. Try some career fairs that did not work for me at all, as I am in the field service.

Hope you find something soon and do not loose hope and keep the same energy as when you were in college.

Same story here dude. I graduated in August though with a 3.0 from a good school. The market is awful, and its gonna get worse. In all honesty you're probably gonna be working a job for 10 dollars an hour in retail or something wondering why you went to school at all. Between Wall Street and people buying houses they can't pay for its just looks hopeless for the next few months. I saw on CNBC where the guy said even if this bail out is perfect, it is probably gonna get worse for the next 8 months before it slowly gets better. So in 1 year from now we might be in the exact same spot. Hopefully not but as you and I both know by now, its not looking good for ANY entry-level job in the business world.

Been there done that five years ago so I feel your pain. I also visited family and friends before moving across country and I didn't get anything until February so it was a total of nine months between graduation and my first job and the job market was much better then. I would suggest some type of entry level sales or marketing position just to get your foot in the door and take it from there. It might only pay 28-30K a year but it's a start. Try looking at companies like paychex or adp as they usually hire entry level sales associates.

As corny as it sounds Victor, you just have to keep plugging away everyday in trying to find a good job. One thing that will help is reading the Indeed forums because some people do give insightful infomation that worked for them and may also work for you.

Your job as a Marketing Assistant should give you some meat to put down on your resume, most college students coming out don't have any real work experience-you do, so you are one up on most.

You might want to post your resume online if you haven't allready (on Monster, Careerbuilder, etc). Beware though, you will get alot of junk jobs calling, but there might be that one good one you have been waiting for.

Good Luck, in the future, when you are making great money and working for a great company, don't forget this experience and make sure you give somebody a chance who is struggling to find work (like you are now). Again, Good luck.
